This course examines the major themes in Young Adult Literature from its beginnings in the 1800s to the present. Through historical, social, psychological, critical and biological lenses, literature for ages 12 to 18 will be explored. Special attention will be given to the genres of YA literature, crossover literature, the Bildungsroman, series fiction and the problem novel. After a historical introduction, we will primarily focus on recent examples.
