A survey of American history from the colonial period to the Civil War, United States History I emphasizes drawing lessons from the past and informing how those lessons from the American Republic’s past aid in the creation of a “more perfect Union.” Additionally, the class will, through the use of an array of primary sources, help students think critically about historical events, context, and perspective. Finally, the course will include various roundtable discussions throughout the semester, based on assigned primary document readings. These discussions, guided by thought-provoking questions from students, will explore the relevance, importance, and applicability of American history in our daily lives.
