Prior to registering for this course, please ensure you have completed the one-time SAGE New Participant Application.

Participants can take up to THREE courses in a given term.

DATES: Monday, Wednesday
TIME:
1:30 PM - 4:15 PM
PROFESSOR:
Abigail Gomez

**NOTE: Course participation includes a $60.00 fee for supplies.

In this course students will investigate "slow photography" through hand-applied emulsions, UV-light sensitive processes, and physical intervention on the photographic surface. Emphasis is placed on the materiality of the image, moving beyond the digital screen to create unique, tangible objects. Key processes include Cyanotypes, Anthotypes (plant-based printing), Salt prints, and "Lumen" prints, alongside experimental techniques like digital negatives and image transfers.

Central to the course is the concept of experimental inquiry. Students are encouraged to embrace unpredictability, artifacts, and chemical "failures" as fertile ground for artistic expression. Additionally, students will learn to create custom digital negatives, learning how to back-engineer modern digital photographs to print via analog, daylight-based methods. Students will develop a body of work that challenges contemporary definitions of what a photograph can be.

If any course is full, contact Scott King (sking4@su.edu) to be placed on a waiting list.
